DE*FACE

CARNIVALESQUE SPACES OF TRANSGRESSION

TYPE : Theater Space

VIRTUAL REALITY COMPONENTS :  Building Exterior

YEAR :  2015

Graffiti has the capability of expressing chaos with the physical and social order of the city, taking on a lot of the transgressive aspects which Mikhail Bahktin has called “carnivalesque”. The transgressive aspect of the carnival for Bahktin is manifested in the ways that everyday notions of authority are challenged through the provisional transformation of the uses and aesthetics of public space. During the Carnival, not unlike during the act of tagging a wall, citizens transgress the habitual boundaries of the sidewalk and take command of the city’s streets. De*Face explores the notion of an architectural graffiti ; walls become "vandalized” with extrusions and perforations that at some instances look like a 2d pattern but at other instances show their three-dimensionality and the circulation that allows for the transgression of the boundaries of the walls
